About the University

Named as one of the UK’s Top 40 universities in the Guardian University Guide 2025, the life-changing University of Sunderland has 25,600 students based in campuses on the north-east coast, in London, Hong Kong, and at its global partnerships with learning institutions in 15 countries.

We have been rooted in the city of Sunderland since the establishment of Sunderland Technical College in 1901.

The University of Sunderland is a global institution. City Campus, Sunderland

Sunderland has a rich history and one of the UK’s lowest costs of living. City Campus is at the centre of our modern city, and is home to our main administration and support services, library, lecture halls, and our excellent sport facilities at CitySpace. It is also the centre for the University’s Arts and Design courses and home to our main Sciences provision, housing our world-famous Pharmacy facilities, our Living Labs, School of Nursing and the newly-established School of Medicine.

The University’s impressive riverside campus is within easy reach of both the city and Sunderland’s miles of beautiful beaches. Business, Law, Tourism, Education and Social Sciences are based here, as is the University’s main centre for Computing and Engineering. Media is also taught here, at The David Puttnam Media Centre, which houses a cinema, industry-standard TV studios, lecture halls and the University’s award-winning community radio station, Spark Sunderland. The riverside is also home to the Northern Centre of Photography, the National Glass Centre, as well as The David Goldman Technology Centre, a high-tech computing environment with strong links to software companies and a constant exchange of ideas and people.

Getting settled in Sunderland

We're also in the top 10 universities in Europe for International Student Diversity (QS World University Rankings: Europe 2024). So you'll not be alone! Getting settled and feeling comfortable in your surroundings is important to us. We can help you with things like registering with a GP and how to vote.

We can also help you with your safety around campus like public transport, parking and we even have a Student's Union mini bus where you can travel for free between both campuses and halls of residence.

 

Wellbeing support

We have teams in place to help you if you are struggling with your mental health. Our team of wellbeing professionals are here to support you with any problems you may be facing. We also have 24/7 support.

Our chaplaincy team also offer a listening ear and support for anyone who needs it. They also offer great prayer and faith facilities on campus and a great source of information for local places of worship and faith communities.

Our Student Financial Guidance Team can help you with any financial issues or guidance you may need, like budgeting, money management and scholarships.

Accommodation

Living in a student-friendly city like Sunderland is an amazing experience. We know moving away to university is one of the biggest and most exciting decisions you’ll ever make, and you’ll find a home from home at Sunderland. 

 

We offer a great choice of accommodation within a short distance of our two campuses and the city centre. Choose from three University-managed residences, all in an excellent location to cater to your needs.

We're the 7th cheapest UK city for student accommodation (Student Crowd, Cheapest UK cities for student accommodation league table, 2024), with prices starting at £88 a week.

Our three university-managed residences include Panns Bank and Scotia Quay, both with riverside views, and The Precinct, which is within walking distance of City Campus.

Located less than a mile away from our two campuses and the city centre, all three residences offer free transport, so you'll be in easy reach when you need to get to class.

All our accommodation is self-catered with fully equipped kitchens and onsite laundry facilities, and we offer options for you to choose to live with friends, in a single-gender flat, or a single-culture flat. We also have family and couples' accommodation available if you’re coming to the University with your partner and/or children (space for two adults and a maximum of two children).
